5th Grade Guidance
The first 6 weeks of the 5th grade guidance curriculum focuses on the transition to the Middle School and Bullying prevention. In the final 6 weeks, 5th graders continue learning about Bullying and also learn friendship and communication skills. Discussion topics include:

6th Grade Guidance
The focus of guidance in the 6th grade is learning conflict resolution or problem-solving skills and to continue learning about bullying (what it is and what we can do about it). Discussion topics include:
- Defining Conflict Resolution
- Conflict Resolution Styles
- Understanding a Persons Point of View
- Behaviors the Escalate Conflicts
- Communication Styles
- Brainstorming Solutions to a Problem
- Choosing and Agreeing to a Solution
- The 4 Forms of Bullying (a review)
- Talk Strong, Walk Strong (i.e. standing up for yourself)
- Bullying is Everyone's Responsibilty (i.e. the role of the bystander)
8th Grade Choice Class - "Life Skills"
The Social Skills choice class fulfills the states "Act 51" requirement for 8th graders. Act 51 relates to drug and alcohol education. At GEMS, we use the "Life Skills" program which includes drug and alcohol education and addresses the following standards: Communication; Reasoning and Problem-Solving; Personal Development; Civic/Social Responsibility.
